Matthew T. Provencher, MD MBA CAPT MC USNR (Ret.)
Matthew T. Provencher, MD MBA CAPT MC USNR (Ret.), a native of Barrington, New Hampshire attended Oyster River High School in Durham, New Hampshire and the United States Naval Academy, where he was appointed the Deputy Brigade Commander (Second in command), graduated with Distinction (Highest Honors) with a Major in Electrical Engineering, and was designated as Secretary of the Navy Distinguished Graduate. He was also inducted into Phi Kappa Phi (The National Honor Society), Tau Beta Pi (The National Engineering Honor Society), and Sigma Pi Sigma (The National Physics Honor Society). During his undergraduate years, Dr. Provencher was also a 4-year varsity oarsman and Two-Time First-Team All-American at Navy and named Most Valuable Oarsman. He completed his medical education at Dartmouth Medical School where he graduated with Honors and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
Dr. Provencher completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at the Naval Medical Center San Diego and his Orthopaedic Shoulder, Knee and Sports Surgery Fellowship at Rush University. A prolific researcher, he has received numerous academic and research awards including the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Aircast Award, AOSSM Fellowship Research Award, the American Journal of Sports Medicine (AJSM) Best Overall Paper Award, the AOSSM Hughston Award, as well as the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) Science Award, the ISAKOS Richard Caspari Award, and the Arthroscopy Journal Award for Basic Science Research Excellence. He has given over 1200 peer-reviewed and invited national and international presentations in the realm of sports medicine and leadership. He has also published 420 peer-reviewed articles and has authored 8 textbooks, one of which is a best-selling Elsevier title called: Shoulder Instability: A Comprehensive Approach.
Captain Provencher was also selected for several prestigious traveling fellowships focused on leadership, including the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) John Fahey North American Traveling Fellowship, the American-British-Canadian (ABC) Fellowship, and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Traveling Fellowship. He has received numerous peer-reviewed grants from funding agencies including CDMRP (Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program), PRORP (Peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Research Program); OREF (Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation) and the DoD (Department of Defense) totaling $12.8 Million. He has used these funds to help establish MOTION (Military Orthopaedic Tracking Injuries Network) as an Executive Board Founding Member – a program that is dedicated to helping study musculoskeletal injuries and human performance in the military system and use the data to help design injury prevention programs. In addition, he also designed studies to help our military members return to duty in a safer and more predictable manner through development of MPOWR (Mobile Platform for Optimizing Warfighter Rehabilitation), and BISS (Balboa Instability Severity Index Scores). These programs are used to test the military warfighter prior to return to battle so that they are optimized in every aspect of the musculoskeletal system.
In a leadership capacity, Dr. Provencher has served many important roles both in the Navy and as a civilian. He served as an Orthopaedic Staff Surgeon at the Naval Medical Center San Diego from 2004 to 2013 and was appointed The Director of the Sports Medicine and Surgery from 2007 to 2013. As the Head Orthopaedic Team Physician for the Navy Seal Teams 1, 3, 5 and 7, he was instrumental in setting up the Special Forces Tactical Athlete Program (TAP) – a comprehensive wellness, injury prevention and rehabilitation program for Naval Special Forces. In addition to his orthopaedic duties, Dr. Provencher performed extensive Humanitarian and Disaster Relief (HDR) work. In this capacity, he served as the Director for Surgical Services (DSS) for five years on the USNS Mercy (TAH-19) and led a 650-member surgical team during Pacific Partnership 2012 – the largest Humanitarian and Civic Action in the Asia-Pacific region focused on building stronger relationships and improving disaster response capabilities with partner nations. In this capacity, he led a 650-member medical-surgical team on a 5 country Disaster Relief training mission in the Asia Pacific region in both 2010 and 2012.
In 2012, Dr. Provencher then took on the positions of Chief of Sports Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Visiting Professor of Harvard Medical School, and Medical Director and Head Team Physician for The New England Patriots football team. He was the Medical Director and Head Team Physician of the Patriots during the 2014 Super Bowl Championship season and pioneered a wellness and injury prevention program for the team. He also serves as a 2nd opinion orthopaedist for the NBA, NFL, MLB, and the NHL. In addition to these positions, he also acted as an assistant team physician for the Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins. Following his time at MGH, Dr. Provencher began his orthopaedic duties at The Steadman Clinic and Steadman Philippon Research Institute in March 2016. Since then, Dr. Provencher has additionally taken on the role of Chairman of the VailHealth IRB (Institutional Review Board). In addition, he is the Director of the Steadman Philippon Research Institute (SPRI) Sports Fellowship and Designated Institutional Officer (DIO), and serves as Team Physician for the United States Ski Team. In 2021, Dr. Provencher also earned his Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Purdue University Global and was inducted into Delta Mu Delta National Business Administration Honors Society. He was also inducted into the Military Honor Society for MBA academic excellence. He is still a highly regarded second opinion physician for numerous professional athlete organizations – including the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB.
Dr. Provencher remains a recognized leader and has positioned himself at the forefront of academics in the field of orthopedics. In 2010, he was elected to the prestigious Herodicus Society in 2010, which identifies excellence in Orthopaedic Sports Surgery. One of his most humbling achievements was when Dr. Provencher was honored with the Colonel Brian Allgood Award in 2016 which is the most significant leadership award given by the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS). Brian Allgood was an Army orthopaedic surgeon who was killed in action but celebrated for his selfless leadership. His dedication to academics remains prevalent, as he was nominated to The Board of Directors for the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine (AOSSM) (2015-Present), AANA (Arthroscopy Association of North America (2015-Present), SOMOS (Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons) (2019-Present), the AOSSM Research Committee Chair (2015-Present), the AOSSM Chair of the Fellowship Committee (2021-Present), and served as the Exhibits Chairman for the AAOS (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons). Dr. Provencher also serves on numerous national and international committees and was the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) 2014 Program Director as well as the Co-Director of the San Diego Shoulder Institute Annual Meeting (2013-2015). In 2020 (through 2025), he was appointed the Chairman of the AAOS Annual Meeting Committee which serves to coordinate a 25,000-person AAOS Annual Meeting. In addition, he has served as Program Director for the AOSSM 2018-2019 meetings, and Chairman of the AANA Education Committee, and Program Chairman of ASES (2022-2023). Dr. Provencher remains active in the publishing leadership realm as the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Arthroscopy from 2012-2018. He is an active member of AANA, AOSSM, ISAKOS, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), and the International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS).
Dr. Provencher was recently named the Healio Honoree Exemplary Healthcare Professional in 2021, one of the Top 28 Shoulder Surgeons in the United States and also one of the Top 28 Knee Surgeons in the United States by Orthopaedics Today. He is also recognized by Becker’s Orthopaedics as “One of 59 Great Orthopaedic Surgeons”. As President and CEO of Proven Performance Technology (PPT), he was recently named as Chief Injury and Performance Analyst for FoxSports, where he and his team provide injury and performance insights in the realm of professional and collegiate sports. He recently retired from the US Navy after 27 years of honorable service, with his last duty station as the Senior Medical Officer at Navy Seal Team 17 in Coronado, CA. Dr. Provencher resides in Edwards, CO with his wife and four children.
